Learning and development requests
We are committed to making learning opportunities accessible to everyone. These opportunities should support individual growth in addition to dxw’s strategic priorities.
This process allows you to make requests for learning and development (L&D) and is designed to cover a variety of resources and opportunities including;
- Books - physical and digital publications.
- Conferences - including ticket, travel and accommodation costs.
- Subscriptions and memberships to online resources.
- Events and workshops - including webinars, in person talks.
- Training courses and certifications - including formal and informal qualifications.
Conversations around L&D should feature regularly in your 1:1s with your line manager. If you have identified a learning need but are unsure of the right solution, please speak with your line manager. The People team can also help you explore options where needed.
The process
1. Complete the L&D request form
When completing the L&D request form you must provide specific information, including the course or conference title, the provider, and a clear justification for how the request aligns with your personal development goals and the company’s strategic objectives.
The request should also include details on the cost, (including any associated costs such as travel and accommodation) as well as the required time commitment.
2. People team review the request
Once submitted, the completed form will come through to the People Team for review. The timeframe for decision making will be dependant on the details of the individual request:
a. Total cost under £100: aim to communicate a decision within 2 working days of receiving the request. b. Total cost over £100: aim to communicate a decision within 1 calendar week, as this could involve needing input from others, such as the Head of Department.
If a delay in these timeframes is expected, for any reason, the People team will contact you to let you know. Once your request is approved, they will be in touch to discuss any next steps, including booking the training.
If your request has not been approved, the reasons for this will be clearly explained and alternatives explored where relevant.
3. How we make decisions
When making decisions on L&D requests, the following criteria will be considered:
- Strategic alignment: The majority of requests should link to one of the 4 goals outlined in our Learning & Development Strategy and/or be a prioritised skill identified in our Learning Needs Analysis
- Impact: Both monetary cost and the time required to deliver the request will be considered.
- Sharing the learning: There should be thought given to how best to share any learning more widely where possible.
Although the decisions linked to L&D spend ultimately sit with the People team they will often make decisions in collaboration with other people, such as your line manager and/or Head Of.
If the request involves significant time away from client work, they will consult with your Delivery Lead and/or the Head Of Delivery to assess the impact and ensure appropriate cover or planning is put in place.
4. Feedback
After completing an approved training course, workshop, or event, the People team will email you a feedback form. This form asks about the value of the training, how well it addressed any skill gaps, and whether you would recommend it to colleagues.
This feedback is important as it allows us to identify any providers or training that may be beneficial to others in the future.
